Prayer means very little to a person without a relationship with God,

because prayer is a relationship activity, and in that respect like talking with a friend, or having a game of checkers with a friend, or going for a hike with a friend.checkers

There is a time at which everyone, even the most vocal atheist, will pray, that being when all other things seem without hope. We have it “hard-wired” into us that at the end of the proverbial rope, we can and should call out to God – and we should. But, before we get to the end of the proverbial rope, many people will never utter a prayer; they know in their heart they do NOT know God, and they know that prayer is a relationship activity.

How can we have a relationship with the God to whom we should pray?

In one sense, like any other relationship, we begin by introducing ourselves; then explain why we want to have a relationship, and what we are prepared to do to have it.

Such as ... Dear Jesus, this is Cliff. I have become aware that I need a relationship with You. I’m told You are God’s Son, and I’m prepared to take that on faith, to believe it. I’m also prepared to believe new things about You, and no longer believe what I used to believe about You. I’m prepared to follow You and Your wisdom. Please accept my request to become part of Your people; I thank You, and look forward to spending time with You, amen.
